Scratch · Lesson 1

Introduction to Scratch

The editor, the account setup, and the first five minutes of a student’s first session.

What you will cover

  • Navigating the editor: stage, sprite list, block palette, code area
  • Setting up a teacher account and a class of student accounts
  • The first working program — three blocks, under two minutes
  • Saving, sharing, and the remix culture of the Scratch community
  • Language settings — the editor interface is fully available in Spanish

Classroom management

Plan for the first session to be loud and largely unstructured exploration. Ten minutes of free play before any instruction reduces the off-task drift that otherwise runs through the whole unit.
